3rd Project: Planar Construction
Objective: Using the example of Frank Gehry as shown in th documentary video “The sketches of Frank Gehry” by Sydney Pollack, create an architectural enlargement based on a section or sections of one or several found objects, using white illustration board or mat board and white bristol board. You may also use vellum or other translucent paper-like material, but you must not use any color. You will not be recreating the entirety of any of your objects, but rather selecting sections or details, and recombining them to arrive at a planar sculpture that could serve as an architectural model for an interesting building. You will focus on the parts of your found objects that have the most visual interest and three-dimensionality. Think about what areas you will be zooming in on, where the best places to end and connect your forms would be, an dhow you will abstract them to transform them into architecture, but still keep them detectable in your final piece. You also need to choose a function for your building – decide what it is meant to do, and think about how the structure supports the function as well as suggesting the original reference objects. We will not be building elaborate bases or “landscaping ” for this work, so consider how it rests on the plane of the table.
